WUWNet'24 SWiG Interoperability Demonstration: open call announcement
The Subsea Wireless Group (SWiG) is happy to announce an open call for the SWiG demonstration session at the 18th ACM Conference on Wireless Underwater Networks & Systems. Taking place in Šibenik, Croatia on October 28-31, 2024, WUWNet is a hub for academics and companies working in diverse areas of underwater networks & systems to advance the community, spur interest and foster collaborations.
Striving to promote system interoperability, the SWiG demonstration is open to all manufacturers of underwater acoustic modems - apply to join our event and showcase your modem's ability to work with the SWiGacoustic standard!
About the event
The event is a pivotal opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of your acoustic modems and to contribute to the widespread adoption of the SWiG standard for underwater communications. We encourage suppliers to showcase their technology and verify its interoperability in a live setting.
SWiG acoustic interoperability demo: the scenario outline
Prior to the event, registered demo participants will receive detailed SWiG packet format descriptions and reference signals.
At the WUWNet's SWiG demonstration session, participants are invited to deploy their acoustic modems from a pier within the conference’s waterfront demonstration area. A remotely controlled surface drone, fitted with a reference SWiG modem, will navigate the shallow water area over a distance of several hundred meters, transmitting its position using the SWiG Level 1 protocol.
Participants are required to receive these updates and relay the information to the local network. Dynamic results from each participant will be displayed live on a large-format screen, providing immediate feedback and the ability to interact.
A Dual Channel Acoustic Protocol being developed and qualified for SWiG based on SWiG Level 1 will be also demonstrated for the same scenario.
Participation and registration details
There is no extra charge for taking part in the SWiG Interoperability Demo, but the participating companies are asked to first become patrons of the WUWNet conference hosting the demo session.
There are standard and tailored patron packages available, with more details outlined on the official website of the conference.
Detailed SWiG acoustic packet format descriptions and reference signals will be provided to all confirmed participants after July 1, 2024.
To inquire for more information and register for the SWiG demo, please contact Beatrice Tomasi at the NORCE Norwegian Research Center (beto@norceresearch.no).
Become part of our event and shape the future of underwater communication technology!
About SWiG
Established in 2011, the Subsea Wireless Group (SWiG) is an international oil and gas industry network promoting interoperability for subsea wireless communications (radio frequency, acoustic, free-space optic, inductive power, hybrid). The SWiGacoustic standard aims to improve communication between offshore vessels and the uncrewed vehicles used in underwater inspection, maintenance, and repair. It provides a simple acoustic protocol that satisfies interoperability requirements. SWiGacoustic is derived from the digital underwater signal standard NATO ANEP-87 Edition A Version 1. It reflects the decisions made by SWiG members to strike a balance between capabilities and compromise in key areas such as bandwidth versus range, frequency capability, and transducer sizes.
